Gutenburg Goes to Church

In a new post called “Gutenburg goes to church,” Internet evangelist Scott Reese imagines the early resistance Gutenburg might have encountered when he wanted to use his new printing press to print Bibles. Those of us who develop, refine, and deploy new technology are faced every day with the kinds of issues Gutenburg must have faced as well.

You want to see resistance try illuminating a Bible. For the past 18 years I have been making by hand an illuminated mansucript of the Bible. I have the blessings of Pope John Paul II and the Archbihsop of York and the Pope knew I am a Methodist and my Bible is the KJV when he blessed me in 2002. But can I get the Methodist church to even do one article on it, no way. The main reason is I am not a member of the club, I don’t have the school tie, I am a layman and so therefore the methodist church considers me to be nothing. The Bible is handmade, no computers are used to make this bible. It is handwritten and decorated by hand. My set of Gospels has 304 pages of illuminations in 550 pages. The calligraphy is a different historical manuscript style in each chapter. So you are into evangelizing electonically, how about some help here. Sorry I am not up on the latest technology but I am trying to find a book agent and a publisher for an illuminated mansucript of the Bible. I do have it all scanned in Photoshop, I got some advice on this from the Getty and the Metropolitcan Museum of Art in New York and guy I know at ILM, but this web stuff is something I do not get. Do you know anyone in the UM news service who is sincere about promising to do a story on my bible because I have heard from some of their officials and I have had people who run the General Boards asking them to do it but apparently they are too embarrased by christianity to do a story on the Bible, better to do some poltical story. I am a layman so I don’t count as a methodist, apparently.

James,I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a difficult time getting help from the general agencies. Unfortunately, I don’t have any great advice for you on that. I’ve passed your comment to the one person I know in a general agency, but I don’t think he is in a position to be much help either. Sorry,Clif
